Heaven – The Final Destination

Summertime has arrived and with it, the hope for rest and relaxation. Perhaps a trip to the mountains or an opportunity to walk along a beach. In our daily struggle against stress, deadlines, and personal challenges, we long for a chance to put up our feet and rest.

In the grief recovery group that I lead, we recently discussed heaven. Jesus says, “In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you” (John 14:2). This place that Christ has prepared for us will be superior to anything we have ever experienced before. Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 2:9, “Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor have entered into the heart of man the things which God has prepared for those who love Him.” The beauty of an untouched beach and the view of a breathtaking mountaintop pale in comparison to the eternal destination that God has in store for those who love Him.

When we plan a vacation, we consider how to get there; we book airline tickets or plan a route with our GPS. Although there are many ways to arrive at a particular destination here on earth, heaven has only one entrance and only one way to get there. Jesus mapped the route for His followers and the means of getting there by saying, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me” (John 14:6). Heaven is accessed through salvation in Christ alone.

Let us make every effort to live in such a way, whether at home, at work or on vacation, so that we can make it to our final destination of eternal rest.
